In the 1980's the Greenway Consortium was formed under the leadership of Ernie
Williams, the News-Sentinel editor, to advocate for expansion of the Rivergreenway. The
next section completed was from Lafayette St to Main St.  A unique aspect of this section
was traveling through the heart of the city with
no grade crossings by passing the trail under bridges. At this time a trail was also
constructed from Foster Park to Tillman Park. Much later these two trails were connected
creating a 12 mile long continuous trail In the late 1980's the Maumee River Trail from
Anthony Blvd to South River Rd, a distance of about
6 miles, was constructed as part of a county flood control project. Another flood control
project in the late 1990's connected this trail to Columbia St.
